Fort Worth city leaders, led by Mayor Mike Moncrief, have resisted putting a moratorium on urban gas drilling inside the city limits despite intense pressure from critics.
Moncrief has said over and over that driller have the legal right to get the natural gas from underneath the ground, and getting in their way will just drag the city into a potentially expensive legal challenge.
Maybe Moncrief ought to talk to the town manager of little old Flower Mound, which has done what Fort Worth has said is legal suicide – taking on Big Oil by putting a moratorium on gas drilling permits.
Then again, why would Moncrief take on Big Oil? That’s the industry that provides him with hundreds of thousands of dollars of income each year.
