I hope it’s fair to judge a fledgling public radio station on a random selection of two and a half hours, because this morning on KXT 91.7 — KERA 90.1’s new all-music sister station – I heard Telegraph Canyon, Katsuk, Black Tie Dynasty, and Colin Boyd alongside The Velvet Undergound, Joss Stone, Bryan Ferry, and Guy Clark. This is sublime. Can the creamy smooth grit of such a local-national-international flavor last? Is this just a tease before 91.7 settles on a full-time onslaught of Yo La Tengo and Alejandro Escovedo – both of whom I also heard? It’s hard to deny that they are talented musicians, but I’ve come to think of them as bland public radio clichés.

Oh, well. If Fort Worth-Denton-Dallas can’t support the kind of surprising but accessible sound combos I’ve heard so far from 91.7, then I guess we’ll get the radio we deserve. Good job, Gini and Joe.
