East Side activist Don Young has maintained a contentious relationship with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram during his long reign as the city’s most voracious cheerleader for Tandy Hills Natural Area and most recurrent critic of urban gas drilling.

So it’s nice to see the Star-Telegram give Don a grand prize in a photo essay contest, even though his entry included a slap against the drilling industry.

“I kept it more about the park and a positive spin but I couldn’t help but put that one line in there about gas drilling, and I was shocked they left it in there,” he said. “The Star-Telegram is notorious for avoiding the full truth on gas drilling impacts.”

Young’s prize included a $100 gift certificate at Target, which “couldn’t have come at a better time. My business dropped drastically during the past few months due to the recession.”

Young is a self-employed glass artist at Don Young Glass Studio and makes a wide array of glass art, including stained-glass windows.
