We ate at Mi Tierra twice in October 2009.
First time I tried the pionones with
rice and black beans. The meat in the pionones was greasy hamburger meat, almost
inedible. The rice was clumpy.
The second time, I had pasteles...nothing but a
clump of green plaintain masa with two or three small pieces of pork meat. There
was no other filling, no olives, no capers...unacceptable! The rice and
gandules..all you could taste was garlic. The gandules taste was almost
completely absent due to the over powering garlic taste. The rice itself was
clumpy, a disgrace! I DO NOT recommend this place. The one star I am giving is
for the crunchy tostones. Nothing else I ever ate or tried to eat at this place
is worth the money! I guess when you are the only one in town, you think you can
get away with junk!

Don't get me started with the mofongo we had at this place
several months ago.
All you could taste was garlic! I guess the art of
ba...

Hola,
I thank you for your input and your comments to help on making us better.

I've looked into all of the plates that you mention and here is what we
found:
- Piononos: Made with fried sweet plantains - which could have been the
cause of the "grease". The ground beef we use is 90/10- with the least
amount of grease available.
- Pasteles: Made with green bananas mixed in with
other roots, not plantains. As for the filling, we are measuring it so that all
of the pasteles have at least 2-3 olives, 3-4 chickpeas, red bell peppers and
about 4 oz of pork. We are making them in-house to avoid this same thing.
-
Arroz con gandules: I;m sorry to say that although I LOVE garlic, I do not use
it for this rice. (aside from what we put in our very own sofrito)

We work
really hard in this little house to make everything fresh, good and flavorful.

Best regards,
Damaris

We ate at Mi Tierra recently. And I'm from Puerto Rico, so I know what
Puertorrican food should taste like and it's completely different than the
Mexican food a lot of folks are used to here in Texas. So if you're not used to
Puerto Rican or Cuban food, go without expectations and you'll enjoy it much
more. ; ) Though it wasn't my grandma's cooking, it was delicious! I was
expecting the tostones to be soggy or stale; because most places here in the
states that serve them use boxed frozen ones, so boy was I surprized with my
crispy fresh tostones! Overall everything was delicious. we'll definetly be
returning.
